A robot vacuum will help you save time and hassle when it comes to regular touch-ups. The top models do a great job of removing dust and light debris and allow you to create no-go zones for pet areas or power cords.

The more expensive models even clean your floors--though they still can't climb the stairs. Look for models that have intelligent mapping, real-time safety features, and large self-emptying bins.

The best option for Carpet

If you have carpeting, select a robot vacuum that scores high for rug and carpet mobility and pickup. A lot of models do a great job of picking up dust that is embedded in carpets with low pile and some are capable of cleaning up larger debris such as orzo pasta, metal screws, and pet hair. But they don't pick up small particles like canister or upright vacuums, and they may miss ground-in dirt close to thresholds and baseboards.

For carpeted homes the 2-in-1 robot vacuum is the best option. You can exchange a cleaning bin to a damp mopping mat. The iRobot Roomba Combo i5 is another good option. It was a great performer in our tests and you can set it up to schedule it to tidy your home while you are away. It can be set up to mop only. We were impressed by its ability to navigate on floors with no flooring and rug. The Combo i5 also has a very long run time and excellent path planning for a device of this size.

If you're looking for a more advanced model, look into the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Self-Empty Robot Vacuum & Mop. It comes with a large dock that can last for weeks and not need to be cleaned. It also features impressive ability to navigate and auto-empty on carpets and floors with no floor. It also has a smart-mapping system and can be programmed to only be operational during certain times of the day (a useful feature to keep the sly kids and pets from causing havoc). The Shark has less suction power than other mop/robot combos but it's good at picking up hair and pet hair and is the best value of our top choices.

Best for Hard Flooring

Robot vacuums are a great choice for hardwood floors as they can easily navigate around obstacles without damaging the floor's surface. They are great at picking up dust and crumbs, but they struggle with pet hair or other debris. They also lack the suction power of a top-of-the-line upright or canister vacuum, which is why they're not the best auto vacuum choice for carpeted rooms or upholstery that needs deep cleaning.

The best robots come with two-in-one features, combining the power of a mop with a vacuum to complete the task in one move. Find models that have an onboard sensor that detects changes in the floor texture and adjust suction in line with the changes. Its sensors help it avoid stairs and other hazards so you don't need to worry about the bot plummeting down the stairs and damaging your hardwood.

The Eufy S1 Pro mop is designed to wash hardwood floors using downward pressure, instead of simply swab them to remove dust and dirt. The pads that are reusable reduce waste and spread fewer germs. They can also be cleaned at docking stations to reduce time. The mops can also be washed and dried to avoid spreading mold.
