Evolution Korea

Until recently the scientific community in Korea has refrained from engaging with the creationists in fear that doing so might boost the credibility of the group. But silence is no any longer an option.

The STR has been battling to get rid of textbooks that discuss evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. But this is merely one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains the evolution of genetic traits over time. The theory is based on the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which can result in variations in genes or entire genomes. Over the course of many generations, these changes can result in the creation of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It describes how individuals with traits that are advantageous can reproduce faster and longer than those with less advantageous traits. In time, this disparity in reproduction can lead to the emergence of completely new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin word"evolution" which means unrolling or revealing, but the concept itself has had many different meanings over the years as it has taken shape in the sciences and other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into another species. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's student embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process through which living things develop characteristics to improve their chances of living or conceiving offspring. Over time this genetic variation can cause the emergence of completely new physical or biological traits in the same population. The variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. However other changes that are not genetic, such as increases in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise cannot be considered to be examples of evolution since they are not passed on to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and thousands of scientific studies however, creationists have taken advantage of the notion that the theory is controversial to claim that it shouldn't be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of references about the evolutionary origins for humans as well as Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestor of birds.

In the United States, efforts to restrict the teaching of evolution have made progress in some states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is urging the removal of textbooks on the evolution of horses and the bird ancestor Archaeopteryx.

The most common type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact way that is described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is true and that the universe and life on Earth was created only recently.

OECs are not as well-known however they are just as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old and believe that evolution is a lie.

Both forms of creationism deny the idea that scientific principles like biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life started on Earth. They argue that evolution is not possible because it would require a miracle, and that the pioneers of modern science shied away from miracles due to fear of losing credibility.

Some creationists are able to accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and refer to their belief "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." This theory states that God creates the original species and 에볼루션게이밍 then allows these to change over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species similar to the original.

Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things in one event, referred to as the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all the species of the beginning were created at the same time and then slowly evolved. In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. What is Creationism?

STR has achieved its first victory by taking away examples of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx in textbooks. It is now focusing on removing excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution as well.

STR claims that it has the support of around 4000 families and individuals. The goal, according to STR is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints an unflattering image for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of trainees in biology found that half did not believe in evolution. The root causes are unclear however, they could be related to religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has achieved a lot through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was a textbook on natural science with a cosmological perspective. It sparked interest in college communities. In 1991 an academic and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university and it continues to be taught until today.

On August 6 and 7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand.
