The Best Robot Hoover

Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our tests on floors that are bare and are particularly effective in removing pet hair. There are some issues however, which prevent them from being our first choice. One of the Q5's shortcomings is that its navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's therefore prone to get stuck on socks and shoes and couldn't navigate densely packed rooms very efficiently during our tests. It also doesn't come with cameras that let it see the corners of a room.

It's still a good deal, especially if your office or home has a lot of unfinished floors and you want to save money. It's also very quiet and works when you're at work or in school. The only thing it lacks that you don't get in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective in mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on well and aren't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle, however. If you need to mop, the mopping pad can be changed for one that is wet in just a few minutes.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into a compact, sleek package. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as nimble navigation make it easy to clean, and effective in tackling larger particles such as pet hair. It also has a self-emptying bin, powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, though it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

This highly efficient combination vacuum and mop makes use of advanced sensors to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste and it will learn your home's layout over time to ensure more efficient cleaning. You can modify its cleaning schedule and set up zones through the well-designed app. Its battery life is average compared to similar models.

When the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted space, you can tell it to take off and extend its mop. This can help avoid cross-contamination. It's more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically fills up its base, and supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also clean the floor even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature we haven't seen before on other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

With a sleek circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba than the competition's boxy units this robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most attractive looking models in our evaluations. iRobot's latest flagship model also happens to be its smartest model, with features that are cutting-edge like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology as well as future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's also the only robotic vacuum or mop that scored an absolute 10 out of 10 in our tests. This is thanks to the combination of high-tech sensors including a structured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can fully self-refill and empty its base station and it has an industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is simple to use. It has an easy mobile application interface and is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that the X40 still a loud unit. This could be a problem in mornings before work or at night when you're trying to sleep.

It's also quite expensive, but not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally impressive and attractive. If you're willing to put up some more volume and a little more cost this is a powerful two-in-one that will satisfy most people.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with many advanced features that let you forget about your chores. Like Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take the care of vacuuming and mopping, with a multifunction dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank, and cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot vacuum cleaners best uses an array of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and spot obstacles, making it more efficient than its top rivals. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time hazards detection however this was not foolproof in our tests and was often confused with obstructions or power cords.

Its auto vacuum and mop has a suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to complete the task. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home in accordance with the degree of dirt they are.

If you have a bigger home, it's worth selecting a model with a spot or zone cleaning mode. This lets you inform the robot of which area of your home needs to be cleaned with the help of an app or voice command. If you have a lot of furniture, a stair mode is also useful. Additionally a recharge and resume function that lets your robot vacuum continue where it left off is ideal for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more advanced than its price suggests. It vacuums well and was able to remove 55% of debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using a single pad that uses a reciprocating motion that is cleaner than the other mop cleaners for robots we've examined. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured app, and a self emptying base that can be washed.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through a mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, arrange the perfect spot for cleaning or sort out your rooms with the most dirt to improve performance. The app also provides access to a variety of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.
