Evolution Korea

Up until recently, the Korean scientific community avoided working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. But silence is no anymore an option.

The STR has been fighting to eliminate evolution-related content from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains the evolution of genetic traits over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their surroundings which can result in changes in genes, or even entire genomes. Over many generations the changes could lead to the emergence new species. The predominant theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which explains the process by which those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more often than those with disadvantages. This differing reproduction may be a catalyst to the creation and evolution of new species.

The word "evolution" is derived from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has had many different meanings over the years as it has taken shape in the sciences and other fields. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species transformed into other species in a certain way. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival, or their ability to produce offspring. In time this genetic variation can lead to the emergence of entirely new physical or biological functions in the same population. The shift in gene frequency is known as natural selection and it drives most evolutionary change. However non-genetic changes like increases in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise can't be considered to be examples of evolution because they are not inherited by future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the tests of time and thousands of scientific tests Creationists have taken advantage of the notion that the theory is controversial to claim that it shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary history of humans and Archaeopteryx - a feathered dino that is believed to be the bird's ancestor.

Why is Evolution Important for Humanity?

What is Creationism?

Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and all that is in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians however, not all. Creationists typically fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The most common kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the manner described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is true, and that the universe and life on Earth started only recently.

OECs are less well known, but they are as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions of years old and believe that evolution is a myth.

Both kinds of creationism deny the idea that scientific principles like natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life began on Earth. They claim that evolution is impossible because it requires the creation of a miracle, and the founders of modern science rejected miracles out of fear of losing credibility.

Some creationists are able to accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their view "theistic evolution." This is sometimes also referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the created species." In this belief system, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event known as the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and then gradually evolved. They reject the idea of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating life cannot arise from nonliving matter.

In general, creationists are against teaching evolution in schools. This position is supported by a variety of professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists, however, are more flexible and allow evolution and creationism to be included in their curriculum.

What is Creationism?

When people think about creationism, they often think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they will remove the mention of evolution in their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this campaign. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, the Archeopteryx. The focus is now on removing excerpts from Darwin's infamous finch research and on human evolution as well.

STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families as well as individual members. Its goal is to weed out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of trainee biology teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in evolution. The causes aren't clear however, they could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has accomplished a lot through its lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and an ebook. In 1991 an academic and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught to this day.
